STEPS TO ENHANCE YOUR SINGING
There are three important elements that will create a real sense of emotion when you are singing or playing the piano. These elements work together to provoke feelings to the listening audience. They can bring a sense of urgency, sadness, happiness or fear in a matter of seconds. The three key elements are crescendos, tempo and quality of tone.
Crescendos and decrescendos are all about the sound growing louder or getting softer, which is part of the dynamics of a song. It does matter if you are singing or playing the piano, gradually getting louder or softer in the right places of a song will evoke emotion.
The second element is tempo, which is in reference to how fast or slow a song is sung or played. If you were to change a fast, up beat dance song into a ballad, the temp will change the mood, feel and emotion of the song.
The last element is quality of tone has a few names such as timbre, tone color, sound or tone. The tone sound can be bright, dark, brassy, harsh, thin, raspy, shrill, mellow or commanding. Using the different tone qualities or colors in the vocals or piano sound will affect the sense of emotion in a song.
It is important for the artist to feel the emotion in the song as thy play it on the piano or sing the song in front of an audience. Listen to Vicentia sing “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and notice how slowing down the song, changing it to a ballad and tone quality change the emotion of the song.
