WHAT ARE ADVANCED CHORDS?
What are advanced chords? When playing piano, these chords go slightly beyond your basic major chords, minor chords and the seventh chords. A major chord is a triad, which is made up of three notes. It consists of the root, third and perfect fifth. The difference between the major and the minor chords are the change of the major third lowered a half step. And the seventh chord consists of the triad plus a note added. The note added is an interval of a seventh above the root note.
The advanced chords use ninth, eleventh, thirteenth notes, diminished and augmented chords to create beautiful colors in a song. These chords are fully contained within an octave span. For better understanding we will focus on C chord. For instance, a diminished C chord (Cdim) would consist of C Eb Gb, lower the third and fifth a half step. The augmented chord would raise the fifth a half step C E G#. The C9 would be C E G Bb D, the ninth is D which is an interval of nine from the root C. The C9 is the C7th chord (C E G Bb) with a major 9th added. It’s the same with the C11 chord, it is a C7 with an eleventh added as well C E G Bb F. The F is the 11th, an interval of 11 from the root C.
Chords and advanced chords are used in harmonies for singing, piano, guitar, etc. Some of the best bands use really complex harmonies that make the band so popular. The Beach Boys are known for their complex harmonies that Brian Wilson (musical genius) put together.
