FOUNDATION FOR A STRONG MIXED VOICE

The foundation for a solid, thick sound for any voice register is possible. To have a strong vocal sound while singing in all registers you need to develop your mixed voice. All singers are working to create that sound in their singing. You will not create a power vocal sound without having balance in your upper register and lower register.

In order to create that powerful mixed sound you must have a solid foundation. In order to create a solid foundation, you need to develop a solid and controlled upper register as well as an equally solid and controlled lower register.

Most singers will naturally begin singing with either their upper register or lower register. If you naturally gravitate to the upper register, you need to build the lower register. The Thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle is a wide and thick muscle that forms the bottom of your vocal cords. This muscle is used to hit those low notes with a balanced and supported sound.

If you naturally gravitate to the lower register, you will need to build the upper register.Crico thyroid (CT) muscle is the muscle that creates tension and flexibility in the vocal cords for the head register. The muscle thins out the vocal cords in the upper register so you can hit the high notes.

How to develop your mixed voice is a continuous blend of the registers through vocal exercises. The Bubble (or lip rolls) and the R Roll (or tongue trills like rolling your R’s in Spanish) are an easy way to create a natural blending of your registers. As a result, these exercises will build your upper and lower register.

Listen to Audrey Diaz singing “Shallow,” notice how she has power in both the lower and upper register. Smoothly transitioning through the registers.
