SINGING DIFFERENT VOWEL SOUNDS

When you sing, you form vowel sounds adjusting the soft palate, tongue, jaw and lips. All of these elements (which are called articulators) impact the shape of the vocal tract. There are thousands of vowels sounds in the world’s languages. Paying attention to the vowel sound is something all singers should practice.

Each method of singing requires a different approach in pronouncing the vowel sounds. For instance, in classical and choral music there is a pure vowel sound. Unlike pop, jazz, R&B and country which have their own way of approaching vowel sounds. Each area of the US pronounces their vowel sounds differently East Coast, The South, Midwest and West Coast.

There are long and short vowel sounds. This does not mean holding a note longer or shorter. The long vowel sounds are diphthong, such a fate (ei), kite (ai), rose (ou), cute (iu). The short vowel sound are all single sounds, like mat (a), met (e), mitt (i), lot (o) and shut (u).

In reference to singing, you can sing these vowel sounds forward, back, open, closed, rounded or even unrounded. This all has to do with the tongue’s position and shape of the mouth when singing the vowel sound. For instance, when you sing the word “cool” notice the tongue is back and your mouth is in an “O” position. Now sing “treat” and notice the tongue move forward and your mouth is in a smile position.

MUSIC QUOTE FOR THE DAY:

“Live your truth. Express your love. Share your enthusiasm. Take action towards your dreams. Walk your talk. Dance and sing to your music. Embrace your blessings. Make today worth remembering.”
