POSTURE MATTERS WHEN YOU SING OR PLAY PIANO
Good posture can be defined as the proper stance for singers and properly seated position for a pianist. This is something you are usually taught in your first piano or voice lessons. Good posture is actually very important in our daily lives. Try this, stand or sit slouched, then sit or stand up straight, head held high, shoulders back…now how much better do you feel in seconds! Good posture protects you from the damages of chronic inflammation according to Harvard Medical School.
For a singer, the goal of good posture is to create the largest chest space possible for you lungs to fully expand. If you stand with your back against the wall, shoulders should be back, chest out, chin parallel to the floor (make sure the neck is straight). The position of every body part impacts your voice.
When playing the piano, keep your neck aligned with your back, keep your shoulders down, maintain a neutral straight spine, keep your elbows a comfortable distance from your body, wrists aligned with the top of your hands (don’t let the wrist drop) and keep your fingers arched (like you have a ball in each hand).
Playing or singing is a daily repetitive motion over an extended period of time. Improper posture can lead to strain or injury. So play or sing for with good posture but stay relaxed. Proper posture improves your performance and protects you from hurting yourself!
