GREAT SINGERS HAVE BREATH CONTROL!
Breathing is so natural and automatic to us; it’s hard to believe that we could be doing it wrong. Breath exercises for singing can dramatically improve the caliber of vocal performance. Each note and phrase are improved by breath control, which is a source of air being exhaled in steady stream, holding the notes in place. Proper breathing for a singer is crucial!
Great singers learn how to control their air flow on the exhale. When you exhale the diaphragm pushes the air from the lungs through the vocal folds (vocal cords), producing a stream of air. The stream of air is shaped by the resonances (air vibrations) of the vocal tract. The stream of air moves through the throat into the oral and sinus cavity. The key is to control the rate of speed and volume of air being released. Try to use less air by holding a note and timing yourself. See how long you can hold the note. Challenge yourself each day to hold the note longer, which means the release of air is a slow and steady stream.
Not only will you improve your singing by working on breath control, it’s also a way to relieve anxiety and stress. Breath control can calm the nervous system down by reducing our heart rate. By working on your breath technique not only to improve you singing, but your health as well! Lip trills (bubble) and the tongue trills (r rolls) can really help you master control of your breathing. Try doing a few riffs with one breath and try to do more with less air each time you do your vocal exercises. Listen to Destiny Avery sing “Beau Soir” by French Composer Claude Debussy with beautiful breath control.
JOKE FOR THE DAY:
What’s the difference between a banjo and an onion? Nobody cries when you chop up a banjo.
