THE BEST APPROACH TO SINGING
The most important fundamental technique in singing is that of a coordinated or balanced onset. The onset is how you start a note or phrase and a coordinated onset is when breath and sound are initiated together. It is the coordinated onset that gives you a clean start to initiate your singing; it’s a well-supported first note. There are different ways to approach a note when you are singing to create a mood or feeling. You can use a coordinated onset which has a balanced and smooth sound. This technique gives the singer a well-balanced, connection and natural sound. The singer with a balanced onset produces an easy sound that does not seem constricted or forced.
There are different types of onsets: aspirate, vocal fry, glottal and coordinated onsets. The coordinated onset is used for middle to loud volume singing and it is used to sing most of a song. A coordinated onset occurs when the vocal folds are closed but not too closed. This type of onset is where the breath and the sound are initiated together at the same time. It creates a well-supported note that is clear with no tension. For most singers, the coordinated onset is encouraged; every singer is different and it depends on what they naturally lean towards. This is the best type of onset for a healthy singing voice. Listen to Destiny Avery singing “Lascia ch’io pianga” with a coordinated (balanced) onset.
JOKE FOR THE DAY:
Why does the orchestra have bad manners?
Because it doesn’t know how to conduct itself.
