HOW COVID AFFECTS YOUR SINGING (PART 1)
The COVID pandemic has left lasting effects on many aspects of life, including health, work, and social interactions. Among the concerns for singers, vocalists, and performers is whether COVID-19 can affect their singing voice. While some recover quickly without any vocal issues, other experience significant changes that impact their ability to sing.
How COVID-19 Affects the Vocal Cords
COVID-19 primarily affects the respiratory system, and since singing relies heavily on breath control and lung function, it’s no surprise that some singers notice changes in their voice. Here are some ways COVID-19 can impact the vocal cords and overall vocal health:
- Inflammation and Swelling The virus can cause inflammation of the vocal cords, leading to hoarseness, a reduced vocal range, or a raspy voice. This can last for weeks or even months in some cases.
- Breath Control Issues Since COVID-19 can cause lung complications such as pneumonia or long-term scarring, some singers find it difficult to sustain notes, control their breath, or sing with the same stamina as before.
- Post-Viral Fatigue and Weakness Many people who have had COVID-19 report ongoing fatigue, which can affect vocal performance. Singing requires energy and muscle engagement, and if the body is still recovering, the voice may sound weaker or more strained.
- Loss of Smell and Taste While this may not directly affect the voice, a singer’s ability to interpret and experience their own resonance and tone can be altered when smell and taste are impaired. This may make it harder to control vocal placement and technique.
- Neurological Impact In some cases, COVID-19 has been linked to neurological symptoms, including brain fog and difficulty with coordination. This can affect vocal technique and muscle memory, leading to difficulties in singing.
