TECHNIQUES FOR DEVELOPING BREATH CONTROL

Breath Control Techniques

Improving breath control takes practice, patience, and a conscious effort to engage the right muscles. Here are some exercises and techniques to help you build better breath control:

  • Diaphragmatic Breathing Exercises:

Lie down and breathe! Lie on your back with one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen. Breathe deeply, focusing on expanding your abdomen as you inhale while keeping your chest relatively still. This helps you feel how your diaphragm works and trains you to use it more effectively.

Slow Inhalations and Exhalations while standing or sitting with good posture. Inhale slowly for a count of four, feeling your diaphragm expand. Hold your breath for a count of four, then exhale slowly for a count of four. Gradually increase the counts. As you get more comfortable.

  • Breath Control Exercises:

Hissing Exercise: Take a deep diaphragmatic breath, then release the air slowly while making a “ssss” sound. Use the exhalation of air to maintain a steady sound for as long as possible. This exercise helps you control the flow and pressure of air.

Silent Breath Release: Inhale deeply and exhale as quietly as possible. This helps you focus on releasing air steadily and smoothly, without creating unwanted tension in the throat or chest.

Lip Trills and Tongue Trills: My personal favorite! Performing lip trills (blowing air through your lips while your lips bubble. Or tongue trills (the rolled R, vibrating your tongue at the roof of the mouth slightly behind the front teeth with air being exhaled) like rolling your tongue when speaking Spanish, Italian and Russian. These exercises help relax the vocal cords and improve breath management.

  • Singing Sustained Notes:

Practice sustaining a single note on a comfortable pitch for as long as possible without straining. Focus on maintaining a consistent volume and tone throughout. Gradually extend the duration as your breath control improves.

  • Singing Scales and Arpeggios:

Singing scales and arpeggios with varying dynamics (soft to loud and back) will help you learn to control breath pressure while transitioning between pitches and intensities.

Tips for Maintaining Good Breath Control

  • Maintain Good Posture: A straight, relaxed posture allows your diaphragm and lungs to expand fully, providing the best support for your voice. Avoid slouching or tensing your shoulders while singing.
  • Stay Relaxed: Tension in your throat, shoulders, or chest can restrict your airflow and negatively affect your singing. Focus on staying, relaxed, especially when singing challenging passages.
  • Stay Hydrated: Hydration helps keep the vocal cords lubricated, making it easier to control your breath and sing smoothly.
  • Practice Regularly: Like any skill, breath control improves with regular, focused practice. Incorporate breathing exercises into your daily routine to build and maintain your breath control. If you are unsure, find a vocal coach in your area to help you with the exercises.
