WHAT IS TIMBRE IN YOUR VOICE?
What is timbre? The melody, harmonies and dynamics add to the subject matter and emotional structure of a song. Timbre adds to the tone color and distinct quality of sound in the song, making the singers voice uniquely identifiable.
There is a distinct difference in sound from one brand of piano to the next. A Baldwin has a somewhat tinny sound, whereas the Steinway has a warm and rich sound. You could make that comparison with most instrument brands. The same goes for each instrument, an acoustic guitar verses and electric guitar. A flute verses a clarinet, each has its own timbre. If you played the same note on a guitar and the piano at the same time, the sound is completely different even though the note is the same.
The same is true for voices, each singer has their own unique sound. For instance, Billie Eilish singing “What Was I Made For?”, her timbre adds so much color and character to the song. When you hear the sound of her voice, you know it’s Billie Eilish because of her timbre, very distinct and recognizable. This is why I prefer to play the piano when a singer is pitchy in a lesson. If it’s a male singer and I sing the same note, it will sound higher because of my timbre.
Timbre (sounds like tam ber) adds layers of complexity and richness to a song. It helps creating contrast and contributes to the mood of a song. If you want to select the perfect voice and instruments for your song, master the concept of timbre.
