MAPPING OUT A VOCAL PERFORMANCE

To masterfully sing a song with confidence and superior performance, your song should be mapped out, notations made to perform it at your best. You should already have the ability to move from register to register seamlessly mastered, as well as breath and diaphragm support. Those are your foundational support structures. As you move through the song you will notice key points that need to be addressed and figured out before your performance. Print out a lyric sheet and start marking places for these key notes.

First, where your will ad lib in the song, and add runs or riffs. It’s important to ad lib in areas where there is intense dynamics and emotion. When you ad lib, don’t be sloppy, you must be intricately correct making sure each note is correct and the emotion is felt!

Second, mark where you need to conserve your breath or take quick breaths. Notate the places that need to be cut short, so you can move to the next phrase quickly. Make notations where you need to conserve your breath because you are singing a long phrase or holding a note at the end of a phrase. Adding a little breathiness, a pause, a bend in the note, or even vibrato will add to the emotional impact of the song.

Do the song justice by delivering the intended message. You must feel it in order for your audience to feel it. Be in the moment of the words and the feeling of the song, and the emotional message you are singing. Mapping out your lyric sheet for these important adjustments in the song will be a game changer for mastering a song. If you are having trouble, find a good vocal coach to help you get started.
