To begin writing your own songs can be a bit intimidating. The starting process of writing a song can take just as long as finishing the song. Choose the idea or subject. The idea or story you want to tell can take some thought and brainstorming. Here are some tips to help you along.
Working with a few people can help in the beginning. You can bounce ideas off each other and help get the creative process going. If you are in a band, once you’ve got the general idea or melody is worked out, everyone can complete individually parts on their own.
This next tip is only good if you are over 21 years old. Alcohol has been proven to boost your creativity, but it can make it hard to focus. By adding coffee or a caffeinated beverage helps you to focus. This combo works well together, but in moderation. If you get carried away the songwriting session turns into a drinking session.
You can shake things up a little by writing different songwriting elements on pieces of paper. For instance, write lyric theme, song melody, the hook, what key the song is written in, all on pieces of paper. Place them in a hat the draw them. The results will surprise you, and help you think outside the box.
If you want to be inspired and expand your creativity, go for long walks in different places that you have not been before. You need to change the scenery. The new location, fresh air, and walking will help generate new ideas. Stress is a major deterrent for creativity.
