WHAT IS VOCAL TECHNIQUE?
What is vocal technique? Good vocal technique is comprised of many things. Singing with good technique deals with your tone, the way you express the lyrics, identifying and putting your emotions into the song, beauty of your voice, musicality and expression. Those are the broad areas of vocal technique.
As you break it down, good vocal technique is about warming up properly. Proper posture is very important to maintain good technique. Relaxing the throat and having the ability to control your voice using vibrato when needed or just holding notes solid without wavering in pitch for an extended period of time. Working on breath control, diaphragm support, vibrato, vowels enunciation, articulation and diction.
There are many different ways of training for vocal technique. For instance: Estill Voice Training, Belcanto (Operatic Singing Style), Speech Level Singing, Vocal Pedagogy, Lichtenberger Method and Resonance Technique (used in meditation and yoga). Having the knowledge and ability to apply these different methods and use the approaches that work best for you to maximize your vocal abilities.
Every singer has strengths and weaknesses. It’s important to know and understand your abilities, and really work on the strengths. Do not focus on the weaknesses, just work on them, but do not let that be your focus. Hone in on your strengths and build from there. I had two clients, one singer was naturally gifted with the ability to create runs and what I call vocal gymnastics like Whitney Houston. The other clients had an amazing sound, their articulation, enunciation and creating their own unique sound with amazing range like Haley Reinhart. Each wanted to sing like the other. You cannot turn an apple into an orange! Trying to recreate your natural gifts will take a lot of work, it can be done, buy it’s silly. Both sounded amazing just the way they are, with their own natural abilities. Building on the natural strengths and do not focus on recreating your vocal style. You will be much more productive in the long run.
