HOW TO GET RID OF A NASAL SOUND

Getting rid of a nasal sound in your singing involves a combination of techniques to adjust your vocal resonance and improve overall vocal control. If you have a very nasal tone when you speak, then I suggest you see an ENT doctor because these tips below might not work. Here are a few tips to help you achieve a more balanced, non-nasal tone when you sing:

  1. Check Your Nasal Resonance: If you feel vibrations primarily in your nasal passages when you sing, you might have a nasal sound. Aim to redirect the resonance away from your nose and toward the back of your throat. Placing the sound in the sinus mask does not mean you have a nasal tone. Record yourself and listen.
  2. Modify Vowel Sounds: Some vowel sounds can contribute to a nasal tone if not pronounced correctly. Experiment with modifying vowel shapes to find positions that allow for more resonance in the mouth and not the nose. For example, instead of singing “ee” as in “see,” try slightly rounding your lips to produce a more open “eh” sound.
  3. Focus on Mouth Placement: Pay attention to the placement of your mouth while singing. Aim to create space in the back of your mouth while singing. You can do this in the back of your mouth by dropping your jaw and lifting the soft palate.
  4. Listen and Adjust: Record yourself singing and listen back critically. Pay attention to moments when you detect nasality in your tone and make adjustments accordingly.

If you want to decrease or eliminate the nasal tone in your singing voice, keep an open throat. Say the mum and notice how the back of your throat opens because the soft palate stays up. A nasal tone is not bad, many country singer have a nasal sound. We all have a uniquely different sound, no two voices are exactly alike. It’s up to you and how you want to sound.

Remember that eliminating nasality from your singing voice may take time and consistent practice. Be patient with yourself as you work towards developing a more balanced and resonant vocal tone.
