REFINING YOUR VOCAL STYLE
There are small but powerful vocal elements you can work on, refining your own unique vocal style. Whenever you are singing a cover song, hone your own vocal style by working on some singing elements. Try experimenting with volume, intensities, phrasing, tempos and keys to create your own sound.
Volume: Singing in a gradual crescendo or decrescendo in a song, or quickly adding loudness or softness to a single word. The loud and soft vocals is called the dynamics.
Intensity: Vocal intensity is the power or strength in your voice when you sing. Your vocal cords can be strengthened through vocal exercises.
Phrasing: Phrasing is how you break down a song into musical ideas, which includes where to breathe and where to place emphasis. It is how you sing each word in the rhythm, timing and intensity.
Tempo & Keys: The tempo and key of a song can create a mood. A slower tempo in a minor key can create a mysterious, sinister, or even sad song. An up-tempo song in a major key will create a happy and celebratory song.
It’s important for a singer to control their voice when they sing. Vocal control will take an average singer to an extraordinary vocalist. A true artist finds their individual interpretation of a song. Never sing a song the same way twice and try not to be a parrot that mimics another artist’s vocals. Be creative and naturally find your unique interpretation of the song.
