WHAT IS MUSIC THEORY? (PART 1)
Music theory is the study of music, examining all of the elements that are used to construct and preside over the music language. The elements that are used include the key in which a song is written (key signature), scales, notes, rhythm, melody, chords and chord progressions, harmony, and form. Music theory is a set of rules and guidelines for musicians to create and analyze music. If you understand the basics, it will help you compose, produce, or even appreciate music more.
The Key Signature and Scales
Songs are written in major and minor keys. The major keys produce a happier, more upbeat song. Whereas, the minor keys create a dark more mysterious sound. Once you identify the key, you will have determined the main scale that you will use. A scale is a sequence of eight notes used for the melody and harmonies, determining the notes and chords you can use in the composition.
Rhythm
The rhythm section of a song includes tempo, which is the speed of a song. The time signature provides a structured base letting you know how many beats are in each measure.
The beats consist of rhythmic pulses in each measure. The beats provide a rhythmic structure allowing you to add other rhythmic alternatives usually played by the drummer or percussionist. You can also have syncopation, swing and polyrhythms beats.
