SINGING WITH VIBRATO
Vibrato is a rapid, but slight variation in pitch when you sing. The singer is oscillating on and off a note. It comes in all different shapes and wave sizes, fast and slow, every singer has their own textures and tones when using vibrato. Not every singer is able to sing with vibrato and some singers prefer not to use it, depending on the mood of the song. There are four different types: the vocal trill vibrato, the vocal wobble, the jaw vibrato and the diaphragmatic vibrato.
Type 1: The vocal trill vibrato is a technique that trills back and forth, on and off the note between two semitones. Trills are not true vibrato, but it simulates the same effect.
Type 2: The vocal wobble is a wide and slower vibrato, that’s why it is called a wobble. The wobble has a larger and much slower variation in its pitch.
Type 3: The jaw vibrato is a simulated method of singing a rapid vibrato by quivering the jaw. The movement of the jaw creates a change in tone, giving the impression of vibrato.
Type 4: The diaphragmatic vibrato is created when the diaphragm pulsates while holding a note. It can sound forced or exaggerated and unnatural.
If you want to learn how to sing with vibrato. Use a keyboard (or piano) play a white key and then play the next black key to the right. Fluctuate back and forth on the two keys. Start slow and try to increase the rate of speed. Make sure you are playing in a comfortable range for your voice.
