PROPER SINGING TECHNIQUE

When a singer uses proper technique while singing, there will be no straining. Using proper vocal technique involves breath & diaphragm support, maintaining good posture, using resonance and articulating clearly.

Breath/Diaphragm Support: There is an important connection between breath control (which involves diaphragm support) and a great singer. As a singer inhales, the diaphragm flattens, filling the lungs with air. When exhaling, the muscles in the larynx allows the vocal cords to come together. This action interrupts a large volume of air escaping from the lungs all at once. It becomes a controlled steady stream of air being released. All of the muscles in your core including the abdomen, intercostal muscles, and throat, work together for proper breath and diaphragm support. This is good vocal technique.

Posture: The goal of good posture is to create the largest chest space possible for your lungs to fully expand. If you stand with your back against the wall, shoulders should be back, chest out, chin parallel to the floor, make sure the neck is straight. The position of every body part impacts your voice.

Resonance: The singing voice can be considered a wind instrument and has three components: voicing, resonance and articulation. The oral and nasal cavities have very important functions when you sing. They are used as acoustic resonators for your voice, along with the larynx and pharynx. They both act as resonators that amplify in various degrees of intensity. It’s important to open your throat, lift the soft palate, and lower the larynx which creates more space for the sound to resonate and amplify.

Articulation: Lastly, articulate the lyrics clearly. Use gentle and precise movement to form your consonant and vowel sounds. These proper techniques will keep you in good vocal health and prevent vocal straining and polyps.
