ADDING EMOTION INTO THE MELODY
The emotion in lyrics need to be supported by the emotion in the melody. The melody of a song is made up of rhythm and pitch. There are different elements you can add to the melody to give it emotion.
How do you do that? There are different rhythmic elements you can add. For instance, rest spaces, holding long note, short notes, staying on the beat or adding off the beat notes. You can combine these elements with wide or clustered intervals that can ascend or descend to really add emotion to the melody. A few more elements include staccatos which are short punchy notes. By adding staccatos to some notes sung or played can insinuate persistence. It can even add an element of distress or anxiousness. The sustained note that soars can add an element of triumph or intense sorrow. The melody speaks emotion through movement and pitch. Most great songs have that amazing effect because the moments of intensity are in agreement with the words, melody and chords.
