DEVELOPING RESONANCE, POWER & PROJECTION

Vocal resonance, power and projection can be developed. You want to develop these skills the correct way. This blog will give you some great tips and exercises to improve your vocal resonance, power and projection.

Vocal resonance is sound and quality of your singing. It is the result of your vocal cords vibrating and the amplification of your sound through the different chest and head cavities. You can improve your resonance with your breath and articulation. Think of your breath as fuel, supporting the vocal cords, controlling the pitch, dynamics and sound. Try this exercise: inhaling for a count of four, holding your breath for a count of four and exhaling for eight counts. (See more about vocal resonance from blog on May 25, 2023 “Developing Vocal Resonance).

Vocal power and projection will help you sing with control, volume and a commanding sound. Always warm up your voice before you begin to sing. Engaging your abdominal muscles, as well as the muscles around your rib cage and lungs when you exhale. This will build power and control when you sing. You want a steady, controlled stream of air when you exhale. By varying your pitch (inflections and nuances), dynamics (loudness and softness), and expression (emotion and feeling), will add some texture to your singing. Any exercise that you do, try to double the riff with one breath. For instance, if you are using the lip trills (bubble) or the tongue trills (R roll), try doing two riffs with one breath. Or whatever exercises that you use to warm up. See how far you go with one breath. Next time try and do two riffs with one breath.

MUSIC QUOTES:

“You have to take a deep breath and allow the music to flow through you. Revel in it, allow yourself to awe. When you play allow the music to break our heart with its beauty.” – Kelly White
