It’s important to know how your voice works and what is going on when you sing. We will discuss the chest and head register today. The difference between the two registers is where you feel the vibration. When singing in your head register, you will feel the soft palate lift. The soft palate is located to the rear, roof of your mouth. When singing in chest register, you will feel your larynx drop.

KNOW YOUR VOICE

It’s important to know how your voice works and what is going on when you sing. We will discuss the chest and head register today. The difference between the two registers is where you feel the vibration. When singing in your head register, you will feel the soft palate lift. The soft palate is located to the rear, roof of your mouth. When singing in chest register, you will feel your larynx drop.

Let’s start with the chest register. To under where it is and what it feels like. Just say the word “hey” and you will feel it in your chest. It is a fuller sound and you are using your belly while keeping your chest open. Always maintain good posture with strong and controlled breath on the exhale. When singing low notes, the vocal folds thicken causing the folds (cords) to vibrate slower creating a lower pitch. Using your chest voice properly will result in a fuller, stronger, warmer & richer sound.

When you are singing the higher notes, you are singing in your head register. The back of your throat open, almost lifted to the back of your nose. Think of it like a yawn, you are lifting the soft pallet when hitting those high notes. As you sing higher the vocal cords get thinner and your voice will not be as full and rich in sound. If you use a mixed voice, combining the lower register with you head register you can create a full sound in the head voice.

Always engaging the muscles in your core, which is the belly, rib cage and throat. Use those muscles to control the singing no matter what register you are in high or low. It’s all about controlling the exhale. This is called breath and diaphragm support.
