DIFFERENT WAYS TO MAKE A SONG YOUR OWN (PART 2)
This blog is a continuation of “Different Ways To Make A Song Your Own” (Part 1). In the previous blog we discussed phrasing, articulation, bending notes and runs (or riffs). Today we will look at vibrato, dynamics, using different vocal onsets and inflections to create your own spin on a song.
Vibrato can be used to add a little texture and emphasize certain places in a song. Vibrato is not a natural thing that happens for every singer. Some singers are able to belt out a melody using vibrato from the start, while others need to cultivate it. If you are unable to produce vibrato, don’t worry about it and focus on your strengths.
Dynamics are used throughout a song. If you sang every note in a song with the exact same volume, it would be so repetitive and your performance would fall flat with the audience. It all about control, knowing where to increase your volume and where you need to sing quieter. Good control with dynamics is a game changer for your vocal performance.
There are a few vocal onsets that will really add some spice to your performance. The first vocal onset is called the aspirate onset, which is a breathy sound like Marilyn Monroe. The second one is the vocal fry onset or growl which is used in rock, jazz, R&B and other genres of music.
Lastly, inflections in your vocal performance are a subtle but powerful way to make your voice stand out and make a song your own. Brittany Spears uses inflections throughout her songs. Inflections are the rise and fall of a note pitch. It can also be described as intonation. This is a way of expressing your attitude and emotion in a song. It’s slight bending, modulating, rise and fall of a note pitch in a single note.
