DIFFERENT WAYS TO MAKE A SONG YOUR OWN (Part 1)
Putting your own spin on a song is never easy, it takes work. You need to add your own personal touch and technical adjustments. You have different ways to put your own spin on it, such as phrasing, riffing, bending notes, dynamics, using different vocal onsets and inflections.
Phrasing is a way for musicians and singers to personally put their own spin on a song, by shaping sections of the song. It’s very important to be aware of how you are moving from note to note. There is front and back phrasing, singing ahead of or behind the beat. Timing is everything, it’s important to know where you can come in and where you can linger on the notes.
Articulating the lyrics is another way to make your voice stand out. If you used a British accent, the way you would articulate the words would be different. Try it sometime, it’s a lot of fun and it teaches you different ways to enunciate words and vowel sounds.
Bending a note is when you take a note and bend it in and out of tune. Some keyboards have a bending wheel which allows you to bend the note on a keyboard. The same thing can be done with your voice. When starting a song or in a place where you are holding a note, you can bend it to add more texture and depth to the song.
Using riffs or runs while singing a song is a great way to put your own spin on it. It’s a fantastic way to alter the melody. You should use notes that fit into the chord structure and scale either up or down. Record yourself as you do this to make sure you are singing good notes. Play with it and have fun.
