CHOOSING THE RIGHT SONGS

In order to sing a song with your full potential, it’s not just about technic, you must connect to the song. What songs are you passionate about and love to sing or play? Have a journal to write down your thoughts on the songs. These are the things you want to look for when choosing your songs

First, you must have that personal connection to the song. Does it move you and take you on an emotional journey with a wide range of emotions. Does the lyrics or music really move you and bring up emotional feelings.

As you listen to the song, take notes on which parts move you. Writing down what parts of the song pull you in. This is a powerful way for you to make a personal connection to the song. Is it the lyrics or the music that moves you and stirs up past emotions. Why do those parts of the song move you and what do they make you feel. Writing down the memories the song brings up. What feelings arise as you listen to it or sing the song. Be honest about your feelings and be vulnerable. That’s where the truth is and that is where you will make an impact with others.

When you are going through something in your life, you will gravitate to songs that reflect those feelings. Figure out which genre matches your voice. Also, which artists match your vocal type. As you sing different genres and styles you will notice which ones feel right to you.

It’s fun to go on Youtube and listen to other singer’s spin on a cover song. You will find different little nuggets that move you, use them. Record yourself while practicing the song and try different runs and riffs. Listen back and figure out what you like and what needs more work.
