DO YOU HAVE PITCH ISSUES?

The term “pitchy” refers to singing out of tune.  There are many reasons why singers go pitchy. If you are unable to hear yourself or if the song is not in the correct key can cause you to sing pitchy. If you are feeling tired, lack of confidence or even stressed, these reasons can also cause you to sing off key. Whether you are a singer or pianist, it is important to develop your musical ear.

A good voice embodies fine technique, which requires you to sing notes correctly, not singing a little higher (sharp) or lower (flat), which means singing on the correct note every time. If you are singing off pitch, that will result in your voice sounding badly. It’s because you are not on the note, it is not your tone. Even when using vibrato, if you don’t start on the correct note before adding vibrato your voice will sound pitchy. Remember vibrato is bending the pitch, so If you start a little off the note and then bend the note, it will all sound pitchy.

An easy way to improve your pitch is by using ear plugs when you practice, everything else will be softer and you can focus specifically on your voice. You can put the ear plug in one ear or both ears. The ear plugs will help you identify whether you are singing on or off the note. This small change in your practice will help you develop an attuned awareness of how you sound.

Another way to do this is by recording yourself when you practice a song. As you play the recording, find places that don’t sound right, most likely you are off the note. Try to slightly raise or lower your pitch. If you are working with a vocal coach, they can find the notes on the piano and play the correct pitch for you. Having self-awareness (being aware of how you sound) is actually one of the first major steps to becoming a great singer.

If you have the drive and a little talent, you can go a long way. The mind is a very powerful tool and you just need to believe in yourself. Make it happen by putting in the daily effort while practicing.

MUSICAL QUOTE:

Elwood: “What kind of music do you usually have here?”
Claire: “Oh, we got both kinds. We got country and western.”
