Voices are as distinct as our faces, everyone is uniquely different; no voice is exactly alike. How the sound is transmitted when you sing is vocal acoustics. The vocal resonance can be described as the attributes and qualities of a voice. The sound, whether it be bright or darker is the resonance. The vocal qualities are affected by harmonic structure, frequency vibration of the vocal cords, timbre, power and flexibility. The word acoustics, in general, is the science of production, control, and transmitting the effects of sound. Vocal acoustics is the sound transmission of your voice.

Vocal Acoustics and Resonance When Singing

Voices are as distinct as our faces, everyone is uniquely different; no voice is exactly alike. How the sound is transmitted when you sing is vocal acoustics. The vocal resonance can be described as the attributes and qualities of a voice. The sound, whether it be bright or darker is the resonance. Vocal resonance or singing resonance relates to more significant amounts of vibration that occurs creating a brightness or darkness in your voice. The sound results are from shaping the throat, mouth and resonating areas. For instants, there is a larger amount of amplification in the throat when singing in the chest voice. But if you are singing in your upper register (head voice) the amplification or vibration occurs more in the mouth area. Always use breath and diaphragm support no matter what register you singing. But you will feel the vibration in different areas depending on which register you are in.

Here is a fun example, call out the word “Woohoo”. Notice how your voice sounds. Where do you feel the “Woo” and then the “hoo” sounds?  Many people say that they feel the “Woo” sensation in the back of their mouth, and the “hoo” in the front part of their mouth.

Musical Quote:

“Music is the literature of the heart; it commences where speech end.” – Alphonse de Lamartine
