WHAT IS A VOCAL ONSET?

A vocal onset is how you begin singing a note or a phrase. First of all, it’s important to make sure you have breath and diaphragm support. This is imperative to create a great vocal onset. How you initiate pitch effects the quality of your vocal sound.

There are four types of vocal onset: 1. Coordinated (or balanced onset) which produces an easy and balanced sound that is not constricted or forced.  2. The aspirate onset which is also known as a breathy onset or sound. 3. The glottal onset which is when the sound is pushed with more air. It might sound pushed, forced or hard. 4. The last onset is the vocal fry (or growl) which is when you have a very relaxed vocal cord closure and high volume of airflow creating that sound. The vocal fry is used in jazz, rock and pop.

The spectrum of onsets when you sing are a bit like Goldilocks. For instance, glottal onset is “too hot,” meaning it’s strong and forceful. The aspirate onset is “too cold,” meaning it’s weak and not forceful at all. Then you have the balanced onset which is a balance of “just right.” The vocal fry is in a league all its own.
