GUIDE FOR SONGWRITING
Songwriting should be a creative and enjoyable process. It is a personal expression of yourself and there are no set-in-stone rules. You need six guidelines for songwriting such as: inspiration, a theme, structure, lyrics, melody, hook you’ve got the basics down.
1. Always look for inspiration in whatever you do to create a song. Inspiration can come from an experience, emotions you are feeling, or just observing someone else’s experience. You find inspiration in books, nature, another song, tv or movies.
2. Choose a topic or theme; you don’t need to figure out the title, just a topic. The subject matter in which your song will unfold. It can be about empowerment, social topics, love, heartbreak or anything that speaks to you.
3. Choose the structure you will use. For instance, it can be verse, verse, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus. Or you could choose verse, chorus, verse, chorus, verse, chorus. You will need to decide if you want a bridge in the song structure as well. There are many ways to structure a song.
4. Writing out lyrics that are based on your topic or theme. Focus on telling a story and conveying the emotion. It’s important to use relatable imagery with creative ways of describing things.
5. Creating the melody, which is the tune or the notes that the lead singer will be singing. The melody needs to complement the lyrics. Try different ways of singing the verses and chorus until you’ve come up with a melody that works and evokes emotion.
6. Creating a hook, which is usually in the chorus. The hook needs to be catchy, and memorable. It can be a line or a short phrase that will play over and over in the listener’s head. Once you’ve figured out the melody and the hook, you can add the chords. When you’ve figured out the chords, you’ve got your harmonies. Once all of the above has been completed, now it’s time to edit, edit, edit!
