UNDERSTANDING THE MIXED VOICE
One of the keys to moving from one register to another smoothly is to avoid pushing or pulling up or down. Your chest register overlaps with your middle register and you head register overlaps with your middle register. This mixed voice is a combination of chest and head voice, creating a smooth transitions from one register to another.
When singing with a mixed voice you are balancing air pressure and airflow. By using a mixed voice, you will not have a shift in sound. The sound will build, instead of shift or break. The Bubble (lip trills) and R Roll (tongue trill) exercises will help you build your mixed voice.
Using the word nay, nay in an arpeggio exercise from chest to head register will help you place the sound in the right place and help you understand what it feels like. Start with C3 or G4 and go as high as you can. The sound also helps reduce throat tension.
Singing in a mixed voice will produce a fuller sound. It is the bridge or gap between the chest and head voice. Singing in a mixed voice will allow you to sing smoothly into the next register without gaps or a shift in your voice.
