WORKING THROUGH A SONG
Working through a new song is always fun! As you sing or play through the song, mark the area or areas that need work. Every song has a challenging section or two that needs work. Whether you are a singer, pianist, songwriter or musician, there is always a section in a song where you get stuck. You try singing or playing that section and it’s not working. What do you do?
Develop a problem-solving mindset. Look at your problems from a bird’s eye view. Ask yourself these questions: What am I in control of? What can I do better? How can I improve things? This will give you a different perspective on problems and help you to learn and grow from it. It will help you to determine an exact game plan to master the problem section
For a singer, your need to ask yourself, why am I struggling in this area? And how do I fix it? Maybe the song is in the wrong key. It could be transitioning from one register to another or maybe the notes are too high or too low. So first diagnose, then figure out a strategy to overcome the obstacle. If you bubble through the area, this really helps you figure out how to sing through the area correctly. Focus on what it feels like as your bubble through it. Now take that same feeling into your singing.
If you are playing piano or another instrument and come across a troubled area. There is only one solution, keep practicing that section over and over again until you master it. Play the treble staff section (right hand) and then the bass staff section (left hand). Now trying playing them together.
Daily practice is always key! If you are unable to master the section on your own find a Vocal Coach, Piano Teacher, or teacher for your specific instrument, to help you accomplish your goal.
