OVERCOMING IMPOSTER SYNDROME!
Yes, Imposter Syndrome is a real condition. It is an internal psychological experience making you feel like a fraud despite success and achievement in the music field. You will feel constant self-doubt, even when you are excelling in your field as a singer or pianist. It all starts with negative self-talk creating nervousness, restlessness and anxiety. We will discuss the syndrome as well as ways to overcome it.
If you have a very difficult time assessing your competence and skills, or you berate your own performances, you may be experiencing Imposter Syndrome. Do you attribute your success to outside factors? The more you accomplish the more you feel like a fraud. This can be detrimental to a singer, pianist or any musician. Research suggests that your upbringing can play an important role in Imposter Syndrome, as well as personality and social anxiety.
How to overcome these negative feelings starts with controlling your thoughts. You cannot stop a negative thought from entering your brain, but you can control dwelling on that negative thought. Replace it with a positive overcoming statement or mantra. Here are a few things to help: write down a list of your accomplishments and talents, surround yourself with supportive people, focus on why you love music and what your goals are for the next two to five years.
