DEVELOPING VOCAL RESONANCE
The ability to use vocal resonance is an essential skill for any singer. Resonance will enhance your vocal tone, increase your volume, reduce strain and fatigue. Vocal resonance is the result of your vocal folds vibrating and the amplification of that sound through various cavities in your vocal tract.
Your breath is the fuel for your voice, not only does it support your vocal cords, but it also helps with pitch and dynamics. Make sure to use your breath to support vocal resonance. This is done on the exhale as you release the air, control it. Allow the air to come out as a continuous stream controlled by your muscles in your core and throat. Try inhaling for four counts, hold your breath for four counts and then exhale for eight counts.
The resonator for the voice is your vocal tract. It starts at the larynx and ends at the tip of your lips. When you sing, your voice is intensified and altered or modified by the vocal tract resonators. The resonators are the throat (container #1 of air), the mouth cavity and the nasal passage (container #2 of air).
The vocal tract articulators are the tongue, soft palate, and lips. The articulators modify or alter the sound of your voice. If you lower your tongue in the back of your mouth and raise the soft palate, it opens the airway for more resonance. The way your shape your lips and open the airway between your soft palate and tongue will help project your voice giving you’re an amplified sound.
Take advantage of your vocal resonance when you are singing, it is a good way to increase the sound when you sing and give your voice more depth. Remember resonators are just containers of air. Have your vocal coach give you some vocal exercises to sing in your next voice lessons to help!
