Singing or playing piano with a specific style depends on a few things. How do you interpret the lyrics for a song? What do they mean to you? What feelings do the words awaken in you, and how can you evoke those feeling to the audience? Where does it make sense to increase or decrease volume? TRY DIFFERENT STYLES OF SINGING

Singing or playing piano with a specific style depends on a few things. How do you interpret the lyrics for a song? What do they mean to you? What feelings do the words awaken in you, and how can you evoke those feeling to the audience? Where does it make sense to increase or decrease volume? Also, the rhythmic pattern you choose to use will create a specific feel and style to the song.

Whether it’s Pop, Country, Opera, Classical, Jazz or R&B, there is a difference in the sound. It’s fun to experiment with the different styles of singing. The different elements of your voice such as pitch, volume, timbre, enunciation and vibrato will influence your stylistic sound as a singer. When singing the high notes pop and rock singer will belt, soul and R&B might use falsetto, classical or opera sometimes use whistle, while musical theater and jazz tend to use the head voice. But it doesn’t always fall in those categories.

You can use dynamics (loud/soft volume) which creates contrast and emphasis. The crescendo (getting louder) builds up tension and excitement. Decrescendo (getting softer) will create a calmness and add emotion. The dynamics is something a singer needs to master and do it correctly with diaphragm and breath support.

Inflections are modifications of a word to express different feelings, moods and tension by bending, modulating, the rise and fall of note pitch. It can also be described as intonation, which is expressing attitude and emotions. Inflection can be referred to the pitch, tone patterns and dynamics in a singer’s voice

Using these different elements in your singing will help you create your own sound and style. Play with the different elements of your singing to have more vocal tools to create your sound. Listen to the video I have attached of Deeya Patel performing “Feeling Good” and notice her distinct vocal choices creating her unique sound. This is one of the best versions of “Feeling Good” I’ve ever heard! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unUkGxOrMV0
