Singing is a physical production and actually has cardiovascular benefits. Even if you do not move around, the muscles in the torso, neck and the lungs are being used. A singer creates sound by using the abdominal and back muscles, the rib cage, throat, oral and sinus cavity. The vocal folds (cords) snap open and closed when you sing. There are so many different bodily functions going on when vocalizing.

If you are performing a live show, the physical activity increases ten-fold. You have to move around, like aerobic exercise, as you control your breathing. Notice singers in a live performance, they minimize the movement as they sing. They start dancing intensely when it’s instrumental and move less when they need to use their voice again.

DO SINGING VOICES AGE?

Do singing voices age? Yes, as you get older your larynx, vocal cords and the rest of your body ages. Your skin goes through the aging process, it thins and stiffens. The larynx and vocal cords begin shrinking as well. As the vocal cords lose flexibility, a singer can lose control over the top of their head register, become less flexible and a singer’s voice can shift and drop. Many changes will happen over time as you age.

As a singer enters their fifties, sixties and seventies they will notice changes in their voice. As the vocal cords weaken, the larynx starts to become more rigid and the cartilage begins to ossify. Your lungs and respiratory system are less efficient which means you can lose vocal power. As a result, a man’s voice can go up and a woman’s voice can go down. Hormonal changes will play a part in it as well.

You will experience vocal fatigue and loss of range. Staying in shape as you get older is also a challenge. You have to work out twice as hard to get the same results. It’s the same with your voice. You want to keep it in tip-top shape, you have work twice as hard to keep it in shape. So, practice every day, stay hydrated and keep your vocal cords as flexible as possible.

JOKE FOR THE DAY:

“I don’t deserve a Songwriters Hall Of Fame Award. But 15 years ago, I had a brain operation and I didn’t deserve that, either. So I’ll keep it!”
