IS SINGING A SKILL OR A TALENT?
Is singing a skill or a talent? It is both natural talent and a taught skill. Some people are just naturally talented vocalists with great tone and pitch, while others have to work at the skill. A good singing voice can be taught. Talent is subjective, it’s a personal feeling, taste, or opinion.
To be a successful singer, you must have a pleasant-sounding voice. If you speak with a nasal tone, you will sing with a nasal tone. An appealing tone is usually genetic and it’s based on how your DNA put together your voice box and sinus cavity, etc. If you have a natural talent for singing, you will be able to detect if your pitch is off and possess the ability to match and/or harmonize with the pitch.
Don’t worry if you were not born with a skillful singing talent. A great singing voice can be taught. It will take training, dedication and drive. The best singers are the ones who are committed to practice and hard work to pursue their passion.
I’ve worked with very talented individuals who had little desire to really work at their gift. I would see them put in so much effort in sports or other activities and their talent just fell by the wayside. I’ve worked with singers who had a little talent, but an intense desire to take their talent to the next level and achieve success. And they started with just a little talent, but great drive and determination which got them past the finish line.
Having a great voice means having the ability to sound good throughout the entire song, not just now and then. The singer can control the dynamics (loud & soft), tone, pitch, diaphragm & breath support. So, whether you have the natural talent or not, it’s all about practice and determination. If you never quit trying you never fail, you are just that much closer to your goal.
