DIFFERENT WAYS TO RESONATE YOUR VOICE
Your voice is like any other musical instrument and it has its own special resonating chambers for your tone. The vocal cords produce a tone, the tone resonates or vibrates through open ducts and chambers. Your resonating chambers are in the chest, mouth, nose (sinus mask) or head.
These different chambers represent various vocal colors. For instance, a voice can go from dark (chest) resonance to a bright (nasal or head) resonance. This allows the singer to achieve a spectrum of colors in their voice. The head resonance is more of a softer sound in the middle or head register. The mouth resonance is created by placing the sound forward in your or in the sinus area. The chest resonance can add a darker, richer color creating a sense of power, sensuality, drama and depth in a voice. The nasal (sinus mask) should be present at all times. The nasal resonance is edgy and bright, producing beautiful overtones.
Every singer possesses various vocal qualities whether it’s deep, dark, chesty or breathy, heady and light. The color qualities of a voice will depend on the singers’ expertise in develop and use their different resonant chambers. You need to learn how to control the shape and size of each chamber through which the sound flows.
