Enhance A Song Singing A Run Or A Riff
Singer will use runs and riffs to enhance the song they are singing. They are both a melodic sequence of notes. How do you tell the difference between the two? A run is a long sequence of notes sung while a riff is a short sequence of notes.
Runs are spontaneously, created to embellish or enhance the melody. A run is also called a “melisma.” The most outstanding vocal riffs are usually done to deepen the expression of emotion within a song, just like a run. But a riff is a repeated short group of notes or melodic idea used throughout a song. A run is like ornamental spontaneous creation of many notes. Christina Aguilera and Beyonce are famous for their very elaborate and masterful riffs and runs.
How do you learn how to sing a masterful run or riff? Listen to the singer go through a run, pause the song and try repeating it. If it is difficult break down the notes in sequence and get them just right. Sing a few notes at a time slowly, now take the next group of notes and slowly sing them. Just break the run down to a few notes at a time, then put them together and try doing it faster until you are at the right tempo. Now try doing them faster until you have mastered the run.
