EXERCISES TO STRENGTHEN PITCH CONTROL
One of the most important aspects of singing is the ability to control your pitch. It’s much easier playing a piano or some other instrument, because it’s visual and physical. You need to make sure you are playing the right note. For a singer there is nothing to see, it’s all about listening, you have a physical and an audio element. Although, I did have a client who used a pitch meter once. That will give you a visual idea of whether to move the note up or down when you sing.
To practice pitch control, try placing one hand on your chest and two fingers on your larynx, now hum a note. Continue humming the note and lower the note as you hum. You will feel the resonance (vibration) lower in your chest. You will also feel the larynx lower in your throat. This exercise will help you understand the mechanics of how your voice works.
The second exercise to help with pitch control is by playing a note on the piano, guitar or even a pitch pipe (there are free apps for pitch pipes) and sing that note. You can record yourself to make sure you are on the note. Every singer needs to learn how to listen to themselves when they sing. Make sure to play and sing semitones. Semitones are half steps up and down. For instance, if you play and sing middle C then to up a half step to C#, which is the black key to the right of middle C, that is a semitone. Continue playing and singing the note as you go up and down the piano keys.
The third exercise is Sighing through the range. You can start on A, below middle C, sigh singing the note and let the pitch drop in the sigh. The next note is B and sign through that note, continuing up the scale. Another exercise is Pitch Sweeps, which is similar to Sighing except you sigh down a complete octave, from C to C, etc. Continue up the scale sighing with each note that you play,
Finally, it’s all about the precise tone (note) you are singing. Even if it’s a major scales or chromatic scales, you must sing the exact note! Remember, practice makes perfect!
