FINDING YOUR VOICE!
An artist creates his or her own musical style, a sound all their own, they found their voice! To be an artist you must start molding your own sound. To find your own voice, start with writing down five of your favorite singers (artists). Next to the name write down the qualities you like the most in the artist’s voice. For instance, Christina Aguilera is known for her impressive runs, riffs and range. The powerful mixed voice as well as impressive range. The vocal control is remarkable and her vibrato is rich and controlled.
Once you’ve identified the artists you like the most and the qualities in their voice, choose a few songs from each of them. Once your chosen at least one song for each singer, write down what you like best about the music. It’s important to know what type of music moves and inspires you
Every successful singer has a distinct and recognizable sound. A singer molds their voice by emulating other singers and mastering the vocal techniques that need to be cultivated. For instance, as a singer, you want to be able to hold a note with or without vibrato. That means you are able to hold a note and make your voice move quickly between two pitches or hold the note solid without any movement in pitch. It’s all about how much control and flexibility you have when you sing. Are you able to get louder and softer in a measure. Can you go from loud to soft smoothly or belt with a mixed voice?
Another step in creating your own sound, is to master diction and how to enunciate the words you sing. This is an art all to itself. More and more singers are relying on inflections and enunciation to create their own sound. The way you enunciate words, vowel sound will change how you sound as well. Just sing through your favorite song with a British accent, you will sound different. Sia has created her own sound through inflections and enunciation.
JOKE FOR THE DAY:
“We idolized The Beatles, except for those of us who idolized The Rolling Stones, who in those days still had many of their original teeth.”
