HOW TO BELT WHEN YOU SING
Every singer wants to be able to belt out those high notes. Belting is a term that refers to singing notes in the head register with the power of your chest register. It is a loud and commanding way to sing. Belting out the high notes is essentially singing the high notes with a strong and powerful sound.
Belting is not the same thing as yelling, yelling comes from the throat. Healthy belting has an edge to it and gets its power from diaphragm and breath control. It means to sing in your head voice range with power and strength of your chest voice. Belting is used in specific places of a song, not throughout the song. Sing the words “ha, ha, ha,” each time you feel the sound vibrate in the front part of your mouth and your stomach muscle constricting. This is what it feels like when you are belting, except slower because you are controlling the release of air as you exhale while you are singing. It almost feels like all the muscles are hugging your ribs and lungs.
A great singer knows how to belt out a melody. If you find you can’t sing or speak for days after singing, you are belting incorrectly. Find a professional vocal coach to diagnose the problem and give you a plan of action to turn your voice around before causing any damage or create bad vocal habits.
