ALL GREAT SINGERS HAVE THESE 5 TRAITS
There are five traits that every great singer possesses. These traits have to be developed over time. There is no singer who has all five traits from the beginning. It takes time and practice to become a great vocalist.
The first trait every great vocalist has is singing with chest voice. They call it the chest voice because singers will notice that the chest cavity will vibrate when singing in the lower range.
The second trait is singing with the head voice. This is when a singer uses the top part of the vocal range. It’s called the head voice because that is where a singer will notice vibrating in the head and neck when singing the high notes.
The third trait is singing with the mixed voice. This is the blend of chest and head voice combined while singing. That is why it is called a mixed voice. If you listen to Sara Bareilles sing the chorus in “Brave” you can hear the power in “I wanna see you be brave” with a full mixed voice giving that upper register power. To have a strong vocal sound in all registers you need to develop your mixed voice.
The fourth trait a great singer is able to perform is belting! Belting is not the same thing as yelling. Yelling comes from the throat. Have you ever attended a rally or football game and everyone is yelling. The next day you have not voice, because your sound came from your throat. Belting gets its power from the diaphragm and breath control. Belting is a loud and commanding way to sing in certain sections of a song, not throughout the song.
The fifth trait is the capability of singing with vibrato as well as a straight tone. They have the flexibility and vocal control to waver or shimmer their voice with a beautiful vibrato sound. There are two ways to hold a note, with vibrato or holding the note solid without vibrato. Very skilled and experienced singers will alternate between the two.
Here are some of the great singers who possess all of these qualities in their voice: Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Christina Aguilera, Elton John, Sara Bareilles, Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Ariana Grande Michael Buble, Carrie Underwood, Bruno Mars, Mariah Carey, John Legend and Axl Rose. These are some of the best singers in the business. They have great range and control. They are able to make the high notes light or use a mixed voice and make the notes solid. They have the capability of making their voice powerful and forceful as well. All of these five traits have to do with range and vocal control.
