4 BASICS FOR A GOOD VOICE
Many famous singers are not the most gifted soloists. Artists like Bob Dylan, Madonna, Kanye West and Paris Hilton are not technically gifted vocalists. To be success as a singer requires daily practice. Very few people are amazing singers from the beginning. The first step is to learn more vocal skills. We will look at a few important basics to create a good vocal foundation. The top qualities of a solid vocal foundation are pitch, clear enunciation, diaphragm and breath support.
A good singer uses their ears as much as their singing voice. The soloist’s ears are crucial to make sure they are on pitch. Any vocalist or musician will tell you their ears are tools to help them sound better. Singer’s use their ears to check their vocal pitch and fine-tune their voice. When you listen to yourself and think you sound bad, it’s not that you sound bad it’s because you are not on the note. You are either flat or sharp.
To master good diction, a singer needs to craft each syllable precisely as intended. Enunciating is more than just pronouncing words clearly, it’s expressing the words well. I tell my clients to close out your words; for instance, the word “flight,” make sure you can slightly hear the “t” at the end of the word. Practicing your enunciation is an easy way to improve your singing voice, and get better at conveying your lyrical message!
There is an important connection between breath control which involves diaphragm support and a great singer. As you inhale, the diaphragm flattens, filling the lungs with air. As the singer releases the air slowly all of the muscles surrounding the chest cavity and diaphragm create breath support. You must control the air being released from the lungs to the vocal cords and supports the airstream being released as you sing.
Always warm-up your voice with vocal exercises provided by your vocal coach. It’s just like working out in the gym, you stretch and warm up the muscles. After your warm up work on pitch, enunciation, breath and diaphragm support.
