VOCAL FRY – THE SEXY GROWL!
We’ve looked at the coordinated, aspirate and hard onset. The last vocal onset called the vocal fry which sounds like a growl. To have a great voice you have to work at technique. There is a technique called the “vocal fry”, which is a healthy husk (growl) or raspy sound you can produce in your voice. The vocal fry is the lowest register of your voice. It is considered a vocal onset, which we discussed in the previous blogs.
How to create that sound takes time and needs to be done properly. Otherwise, too much force can injure your voice. When you speak, your vocal cords naturally close, creating vibrations as air passes between them. When the air passes through it creates vibrations, which produce the sound. To create the vocal fry, take the note as low as you can, using your diaphragm giving it strength/power, using high airflow will create the growl sound.
Once you master how to use this technique, it’s going to make singing rock a lot easier by putting that sexy purr and growl on your words. But, choose wisely where to place the sound.
Listen to Audrey Diaz sing “Valerie”, she puts the vocal fry in the chorus section ‘Why don’t’ you come on over Valerie (1:45 into the video).
