DIFFERENT SINGING STYLES (Part 1)
There are different styles of singing which are used to create a specific type of sound. The categories are sob, twang, falsetto, speech, opera, belting and mixed voice. These different singing styles are used in all genres of music.
The sob singing style is a softer, darker quality of sound. It is associated with crying or mourning. The sob style is produced with a lowered larynx. The vocal cords thin out and release compression. The sounds echo the sound of someone crying, Evanescence uses this style in many of her songs.
The twang is used by country singers as well as other genres of music. Willie Nelson always sings with a twang in his voice. Most country singers speak with a strong southern accent. This accent comes through when they sing creating a twang. Keith Urban is an Aussie, but does a great job creating a good southern accent with the twang.
Singing in falsetto is produced in the head voice. The head voice produces a richer and balanced (fuller) sound. When you sing in falsetto you produce a breathy lighter version of the high notes. Falsetto is a way of singing fluty, hollow and light. You can hear falsetto in the chorus of Maroon 5’s chorus for Sugar.
The speech singing style is designed to help singers go from one register to another without a break in their voice. It is designed to allow the singer to maintain a consistent sound across their entire range while keeping the larynx in a neutral position. I will discuss opera, belting and mixed voice on Thursday.
