The arrangement of a song can be simplistic or complicated. But there are some facts that make a song appealing. The predictable repetition of verses and chorus are loved by all. Not all great songs follow this recipe, but many do! Many artists like the Beatles found that ascending and descending chords are very appealing to the masses. Songs like Lady Madonna, Hello Goodbye, and I Am The Walrus have predictable ascending and descending chords that appeal to the brain because of the predictability of what is coming next.
A great bass player provides a strong percussive foundation. Creating a distinctive bass line can take a song to the next level. The bass line will carry you from chord to chord.
Phrasing of words by the singer or rapper adds to the mix. A songwriter will use words and phrasing to create amazing and intoxicating patterns in the song. Even scatting which is singing sounds by a singer, but it sounds like an instrument.
In order to make the song more exciting you can add different sounds (different instruments) as the song progresses. Adding synths to the background will keep things interesting.
Finding a great hook! What is a hook? It is a catch part of the song that hooks a listener and makes the audience want to hear the song again. The hook can be a melody, the lyrics, or a rhythm.
