Every hit song needs a hit voice to sing the song. To have a hit voice takes work trying to cultivate that distinct and different sound. There are many factors that go into creating your own sound. It doesn’t just happen it takes time along with trial and error. Any music lover can recognize the distinct voice of Christina Aguilera, Barbara Streisand, Marvin Gaye, Whitney Houston or Billy Joel. Creating a distinct voice involves tone, delivery, emotion, sentiment, style and technique.

COMPLETE VOCAL TECHNIQUE METHOD

The Complete Vocal Technique (CVT) is another singing method created by Catherine Sadolin in 1992. Ms. Sadolin is a voice researcher from Copenhagen, she is also a singer. She began her own research with the anatomy and physiology of the singing voice. She also learned how to create the vocal sound of her favorite singers.

As a child, Catherine suffered from asthma and was advised to take singing lessons to help manage her breathing. She was confused by the conflicting information given by the different voice teachers.

She began training other singers and wanted to help them avoid the frustrations she experienced with conflicting information thus, creating her own vocal method. The CVT is an international method for teaching voice. It is divided into four main principles which are: Three Overall Principles, Vocal Mode, Sound Color and Effect.

The Three Overall Principles deals with support, the necessary twang (this is when a singer draws the vocal cords together to avoid breathy sound), avoid protruding the jaw, and tightening the lips while singing.

The CVT Vocal Method deals with the color and effects created by four modes (or gears): Neutral, Curbing, Overdrive and Edge. By choosing a vocal mode, a singer can change the color of their voice from light to dark (Pop to Rock). This is done by changing the position of the larynx or position (or shape) of the tongue.

Basically, a singer will choose the sound they want to achieve and coordinate their vocal technique to achieve that specific sound when singing a song.

JOKE FOR THE DAY:

“I wrote a song, but I can’t read music so I don’t know what it is.”
