WHAT IS THE SPEECH LEVEL SINGING METHOD?
Speech Level Singing or SLS was created to help singers move through vocal registers without a break or disconnect in their singing. The lip trills (Bubble) and the tongue trills (R Roll) are designed to help a singer through the breaks. This method allows the voice to keep a consistent sound throughout the vocal range. It is a “speech level” sound.
Speech Level Singing or SLS is the patented technique pioneered by Seth Riggs. Seth is a classically educated vocal coach in Los Angeles. He studied Schola Cantorum and Bel Canto. He also received his Master’s in Opera Theatre. The idea is to join the different registers, eliminating yelling or falsetto. It’s a mixed voice sound, a balanced way of singing through registers with a resting position for larynx. SLS is about keeping the larynx in a speaking voice position.
When you speak, there is no tension or strain in of the voice. The same is true when you sing. There should be no tension or straining when you sing. This is the goal for SLS, to allow the singer freedom to sing any notes or style of music without breaks or shifts in the voice. This style of singing enables a singer to hit the high notes without strain or disconnect in their sound.
