ESTILL VOICE TRAINING
Estill Voice Training is a vocal method designed by Josephine Estill in 1988. Josephine was a singer, voice specialist and conducted years of voice research. She also enjoyed a career as a singer on the radio and as a soloist.
In 1972, Jo was hired as a voice teacher at the Upstate Medical Center, which had an Otolaryngology Department which studies the ears, nose and throat (ENT). Jo became fascinated with the science of the voice and began her own research.
The Estill Voice Training method is based on the deconstructing of vocal sound enabling the control of specific areas of vocal mechanics. By understand how all the mechanisms work in the voice a singer, Estill was able to control their voice and get the desired results. Estill not only learned how to control the different parts of the voice, she categorized different singing styles: speech, falsetto, sob, twang, opera and belting.
The point is to learn how to control each part involved in speech and singing. The Estill method has a solid foundation of research and science behind it that is used for many speech and language therapists. It is also a valuable tool for voice therapy and singers.
