USING CHORDS TO ACCOMPANY YOURSELF
Singing and accompanying yourself by playing piano time takes practice. It can be hard because you are multitasking, doing both at the same time. The key is to understand the chords you are playing on the piano. There are many ways you can do it. The simplest way to come up with your own version is by pulling up the chord on Ultimate Guitar Chords or another website that will give you the chords for the song. Make sure it is the correct key that you want for your voice. You can also use Youtube for simple versions of the song with chords.
Once you figure out the key and the chords, go to a karaoke track of the song and listen to the background music. As you listen, work out the chords you will want to play on the piano. The left hand usually plays the root (which is C for the C chord) and you can add the fifth (which would be G for the C chord).
The right hand is going to play all three notes of the chord. Most songs use inversions of the chord instead of the root position. The root C chord is C E G. Inversion #1 for the C chord is E G C or inversion #2 for the C chord G C E. Three notes and three ways to play it. You can also add the 7th in there or play partial chords.
The chords can be played at the same time (blocked chord) or three notes played separately (broken chord). Variations of chords add texture and depth to a melody. There are countless possible combinations to be made with notes in a chord. A chord structure is also use for creating harmonies in a song.
