HOW TO SING & PLAY PIANO TOGETHER
Have you ever watched Billy Joel perform? As he sings and plays piano at the same time, it seems so effortless. But behind the scenes it takes an enormous amount of time and practice to master that accomplished performance. It’s very easy to lose concentration on one, while focusing on the other. It’s a delicate dance trying to focus on your voice and playing the right notes on the piano simultaneously. Mastering this skill will take plenty of practice.
The first thing to do is begin with correct posture. Sitting up straight not only looks better, but it helps your voice, breathing, playing and much more. Make sure you position your mic correctly so that it creates proper posture. Your mic should be placed in the proper height and distance from your mouth to promote a straight spine.
The first step is to practice your vocals and the piano separately. Work out any problems with each one. Record yourself singing and master the vocals. Now work on the piano accompaniment and record it. Once you feel comfortable, put them together. As you practice simultaneously, focus on the voice the first time. The second time around focus on the piano. Make sure to record yourself every time. You will be surprised at the little hidden gems that you will want to keep in your performance. It’s important to practice regularly (daily).
